Douglas Preston's description of his writing partner, Mario Spezi is not to be skipped-- read the introduction.
It was said that Thomas Harris, who followed the trial of the Monster of Florence, used the case as the basis for his Hannibal Lecter series. I can see where this can very well be true.
As much a history of Florence as a murder story, this book is so well written that you won't notice that you're also taking a European trip. The trail followed by the Florien law is long and elaborate, filled with ruts and pitfalls, with set backs and sometimes sending the investigators to other countries.
From the first in 1968 to the latest (the last?) murder in 1984, the reporter Mario Spezi followed the investigation. It became his sole focus and almost brought him a conviction as the killer, putting him behind bars.
This novel is intriguing, and not my usual reading choice. I found it fascinating, well written with rich descriptions and history. It is a study in investigative reporting and police work. The truth isn't as easy to explain as fiction and this book proves that fact.
