There was no question that the rebel solider had to come with them. He would have died on the island. But once they were docked they would have to decide what to do with him. Hap walked the pole up the raft and saw that they were very close to their beaching area. He had watched Woody and the wounded man fend off the dead cow. He saw Bug fall into the river and Woody pull him out. He also saw the rebel, start toward the side of the raft. Was he going to go into the river after Bug? Maybe. He didn't seem like a threat, but Hap knew he was. Anyone who put on a uniform, either blue or grey, expected to kill.
They could take him to the militia. He would be sent to the small camp near Camp Curtin and shipped out to a prisoner camp. But would they be able to overpower him? He had a rifle, pistol and knife. He knew how to fight. . .and kill.

The two men headed for the front of the cabin, dragging Sara with them.
She tried to pull free.
Buck jerked her against his body. “Ya won’t be wantin’ ta fight. It’ll go hard fer ya.”
His words sent shivers down Sara’s spine.
“My husband will be home soon.” As she spoke a wave of hopelessness sweep over her. It was futile. If the shots she heard were aimed at these men, they had missed and Edward would be here by now. If they were the shooters. . .her mind numbed at the thought, refusing it.
